ISSUE 3 OF THE ART STUDIES QUARTERLY JOURNAL PUBLISHED
In 2026, the theatre world marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956), one of the great reformers of 20th-century European theatre. This anniversary is an occasion both to recall the importance of Brecht’s theatre for the development of contemporary performing art, and to comment in general on the role of theatrical reformers and their experiments in the enduring relevance of the theatre and society’s need for it. What is Brecht’s influence – and is it ongoing – on today’s theatrical practice? Which of the other great reformers in 20th-century European theatre are particularly relevant today? Does the contemporary stage have new reformers of its own? What reforms, experiments, and personalities do theatre and art in general need today? Who are the significant reformers in Bulgarian theatre? These and other questions about the individuals who change and renew the theatrical stage and cultural space with bold ideas, experiments, and discoveries will be addressed in the texts by leading and young researchers included in this issue.
For the first time, this issue includes the new Translations section. It begins with Giorgio Agamben’s key text ‘Archaeology of the Work of Art’, which our readers will have the opportunity to read in Bulgarian, along with additional notes and comments.
