The Institute of Art Studies presents Peter Popov with its annual Animated Heritage Award 2018

The Institute of Art Studies presented Peter Popov with its annual Animated Heritage Award 2018 for lifetime contribution to cultural heritage preservation.
 
Peter Popov is a renowned Bulgarian restorer with an outstanding contribution to cultural heritage preservation. In 1974, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw (Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art). Until 1992, he worked as a restorer at the National Institute of Cultural Heritage. In 1998–2008, he headed the restoration laboratory at the National Art Gallery.
His decades-long conservational practice was devoted to the preservation of invaluable artworks within what is now Bulgaria such as the murals at the ossuary of the Monastery of Bachkovo; the Church of St Demetrius in Patalenitsa; the Church of St Stephen (the New Metropolitan Church), Nesebur; the Church of SS Theodore Tyro and Theodore Stratelates in the region of Dobur; the Monastery of Ilientsi. He was behind the restoration of a number of mosaic floorings unearthed by archaeologists in Sandanski, Kustendil, Devnia, Stara Zagora, Archar. Presently, he works on the restoration of the earliest mosaics at the Church of St Sophia, Sofia.
