TWO SCIENTISTS FROM THE SCREEN ARTS SECTOR RECEIVE VASIL GENDOV AWARDS

On 16 May, at an official ceremony at the National Opera and Ballet in Sofia, the Awards 2023 of the Union of Bulgarian Film Makers in the name of Vasil Gendov were handed out. Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Bratoeva-Darakchieva was awarded the prize for operational film criticism, and Dr. Petar Kardzhilov, in co-authorship with Assoc. Prof. Irina Kitova and Zornitsa Krasteva received the award in the Book or Theoretical Text category for their book Chronicle of silent cinema in Sofia, 1896–1933.
 
This year all nominations were made by members of the Screen Arts Sector at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Dr. Andronika Martonova, Dr. Rosen Spasov and Chief Assistant Dr. Deyan Statulov were also nominated in the Operational Criticism category. Assoc. Prof. Teodora Stoilova-Doncheva, PhD, and Chief Assist. Prof. Deyan Statulov, PhD., respectively, were nominated in the Book or Theoretical Work category from the Screen Arts Sector for the books "Bulgarian Post-totalitarian Documentary Cinema. Techniques, Trends, Authors, Films, Analyses" and "(Im)possible Freedom. The Ideological Censorship in Bulgarian Feature Cinema (1948–1989)".
 
Prof. Dr. Teodora Doncheva's book was part of the Post-totalitarian Bulgarian Cinema – Models and Identities project, which recently received the Scientific Research Fund's award for best project. The monograph of Deyan Statulov, PhD was selected by the General Assembly of the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as the most significant scientific achievement for 2022.
