Film Art and Cultural Diversity: Master Class of Prof. Xie Fei (Beijing Film Academy), open lecture and film screenings
In the days between June 5 and June 7, the National Academy of Theater and Film Arts "Krastyo Sarafov" and the China Cultural Center in Sofia will present the work of the great director Xie Fei. The events are organized with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria, in partnership with NATFA "Kr. Sarafov", Institute of Art Studies – BAS and Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" – Department of Chinese Studies.
Prof. Dr. Andronika Martonova will be the moderator of the meetings – Asian Cinema Specialist from the Screen Arts Sector of the Institute of Art Studies.
Prof. Xie Fei is among China's leading film directors, one of the pioneers of the iconic Fifth Generation. He graduated the Beijing Film Academy (BFA), where he is a long-time professor of Directing, Film Analysis, and Cinema Language. Big names of contemporary Chinese cinema are among his students: Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Zhang Yimou, Jia Zhangke and others. Prof. Xie Fei was the Vice President of the BFA (1980-1988) and is currently an honorary professor. He was awarded the 2015 Annual Teaching Award by the International Association of Film and Television Schools (CILECT). Author of more than 10 feature films, some of them selected and won prestigious awards from international A list film festivals: Berlinale (Black Snow, Woman Sesame Oil Maker), Montreal IFF (A Mongolian Tale), San Sebastian and Cannes (A Girl from Hunan). In his filmography, the Chinese director has a total of 18 awards and 5 nominations.
On June 5 and 6 (Monday and Tuesday) 2023, NATFA welcomes prof. Xi Fei to give a master class and present some of his most successful films. The invitation is part of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Faculty of Screen Arts.
The master class will be held at the NATFA Aula (20 Stefan Karadzha Str.) at 18:00, followed by a screening of the film A GIRL FROM HUNAN – selected in the program "Un Certain Regard" at 40 Cannes IFF 1987 and award-winner at the festival in San Sebastian. On June 6, again at NATFA Aula, prof. Xie Fei will present WOMAN SESAME OIL MAKER – winner of the Golden Bear Award from 43 IFF Berlin 1993.
On June 7 (Wednesday), the Chinese director will visit the China Cultural Center in Sofia (77 G. S. Rakovski Str.), where he will deliver a lecture on Film Art and Cultural Diversity at 19:00, followed by a screening of the remastered digital version of the film Song of Tibet and a discussion.
