Gergana Kostadinova’s Book “Bulgarian Music at the End of the 20th – the Beginning of the 21st Century: Between Classics and Jazz” published

Kostadinova, G. KorizaThe book is based on the dissertation thesis of Gergana Kostadinova, defended in 2023 at the Institute of Art Studies – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It is dedicated to the musical interactions between classical musical and jazz, which are manifested on the brink of the new millennium in Bulgarian music. Chronologically, works, albums, recordings, and concerts of artists from the period are reviewed (Milcho Leviev, Veselin Nikolov, Simeon Shterev, Anatoly Vapirov, Yulia Tsenova, Mario Stanchev, Lyubomir Denev, Yildiz Ibrahimova, Antoni Donchev, Hristo Yotsov, Boyan Vodenicharov, Theodosii Spassov, Vasil Parmakov, Borislav Yasenov, Rumen Toskov, Angel Zaberski, Zhivko Petrov, Georgi Kornazov, Plamen Karadonev, Milen Kirov, Milen Kukosharov, Alexander and Konstantin Vladigerov, Konstantin Kostov, Dimitar Bodurov, etc.). Special focus is put on the analysis of works by Lyubomir Denev (Rhapsody “Sofia Nights” and Divertimento Grosso), Antoni Donchev (“Bass bow”, “I see a bird flying” and “Illusory freedom”), Hristo Yotsov (Piano Concerto “The Spirit of Jazz”) and Konstantin and Alexander Vladigerov (“Little Requiem”).
A number of terminological issues and concepts such as third movement, crossover, ethnojazz, fusion, etc. are covered. The evolution of jazz in Bulgaria has been traced, with an emphasis on the events and authors of the last few decades.
