Obituary
With deep sorrow, we report the passing of Assoc. Prof. Vanya Popova, PhD (1945–2024), a longtime researcher at the Institute of Art Studies – BAS.
Vanya Popova was a leading specialist in the study of ancient art from Bulgaria, author of a number of publications on sculpture, painting, and mosaics from the Roman and Late Antiquity periods. To her many years of work and efforts, we owe the two corpses of late antique and early Christian frescoes and mosaics from Bulgaria – Corpus der spätantiken und frühchristlichen Wandmalereien Bulgariens. Pillinger, R., Popova, V., Zimmermann, B. (Hg.). Wien 1999; Corpus der spätantiken und frühchristlichen Mosaiken Bulgariens. Pillinger, R., Lirsch, A., Popova, V. (Hg.). Wien 2016.
Until the end of her life, she continued to work, participate in conferences, write articles, and practice her favourite profession.
Vanya Popova was a responsive person and a professional, always ready to support, advise, and encourage young colleagues. She was a colleague, teacher, and friend who left a mark on the lives of those around her.
