The new publication by Prof. Claire Levy, Screen Music Up Close (BAS Publishing House Prof. Marin Drinov, ISBN978-619-245-481-4).

How is music designed according to a storyline’s logic and specific dramaturgical, aesthetic, and stylistic aspects, a more general idea, concept, image, or other side of the film narrative? What can be shared between “music as a character”, i.e. music in the field of the musical-biographical genre, “music behind the scenes”, or, say, the audio-visual messages embedded in a short film dedicated to a pop performance? Conceived in an open form and last but not least as a topic with a continuation, the text focuses on key issues with regard to music as a unique, non-autonomous element in the multi-component synthesis of the cinematic narrative, as well as on some later related phenomena in the field of modern audiovisual culture. In other words, the emphasis is placed on questions related to the functional theory of film music, with concepts in film terminology describing not only certain functional aspects of cinema music but also those specifics that distinguish the nature of film diegesis. The analytical notes on works with diverse genre and dramaturgical orientations highlight potential approaches to studying this type of music.
