Ikar Award for Prof. Nikolay Yordanov, DSc.
On March 27, the International Day of Theatre, the National Ikar Awards for Performing Arts of the Union of Artists in Bulgaria were presented. At the ceremony at the National Theatre, Prof. Nikolay Yordanov from the Theatre Sector received the award in the critical text category for the monograph The Bulgarian Dramatic Canon. Formation, Rearrangement, Rereading. Institute of Art Studies & Homo Ludens Foundation, Sofia, 2024. The Guild of Theatre and Playwrights gives the award.
The monograph by Nikolay Yordanov aims to highlight those authors and titles in Bulgarian dramaturgy that have long-term validity across various historical situations and for diverse social groups. It traces the sociocultural filters of recognition – theatrical, literary, educational, scientific, critical, etc., which have imposed a set of dramatic works that we consider “classical heritage”, “valuable archive”, “canon”. In search of the universal validity of some of the most recognisable texts for theatre, transcending the national context, the author also offers up-to-date readings of emblematic titles from Bulgarian dramaturgy.
