Created with the active participation of the renowned Rayna Katsarova in 1965, this forum has been the most powerful factor in preserving the music and dance of rural traditional culture and maintaining the old performance styles throughout its 60-year history. This makes each of its editions the largest and most prestigious events dedicated to Bulgarian folklore and attracts tens of thousands of viewers from Bulgaria and abroad. In 2016, the Festival itself was entered in the Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
There were more than 6,000 participants (individual performers and people in groups) in the XIII NFAF "Koprivshtitsa". The official opening was attended by the Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov (under whose honorary patronage the edition was held this year), the Minister of Culture Marian Bachev, the Vice-President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Prof. Emanuel Mutafov, the Regional Governor of the Sofia Region Silvia Arnautska and the Mayor of Koprivshtitsa Maria Toromanova.
