4 Dec 2025

On 09.12.2025, the exhibition More Than One Photo. The History of Bulgarian Photography in the 20th Century will be opened at the Sofia City Art Gallery.

The exhibition includes over 300 photographs by more than 100 Bulgarian authors, who build the living history of photography as art, testimony, and personal narrative. Three sections are distinguished that trace the development of the media in Bulgaria – from the first studios and studio portraits at the beginning of the century, through socialist Bulgaria, to the last decades of the twentieth century, marked by the freedom of the author's view and the saturation of the world with images. These hundred years of Bulgarian photography, located on both floors of the gallery, will be presented through valuable originals from personal and institutional archives. The project is part of the long-term strategy of the Sofia City Art Gallery to build and supplement a representative photographic collection, to support research and digitisation activities, and to enrich the fund with works by Bulgarian authors who shaped the visual culture of the century. For the realisation of the exhibition, the Sofia City Art Gallery invited external experts: Ivo Hadzhimishev, Katerina Gadjeva, Georgi Lozanov, Yavor Popov and Tihomir Stoyanov, who, with their research and curatorial work, assisted the art historians from the gallery Reneta Georgieva and Adelina Fileva. Assoc. Prof. Katerina Gadjeva, PhD, from the Fine Arts Sector at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, prepared the concept for the second section of the exhibition, covering the period 1944–1970. The exhibition can be visited until 09.03.2026.
