INVITATION TO ART READINGS 2027: ART AND AUTHORITY, OLD ART MODULE
The proposed topic focuses on the relationship between art and authority – two areas of different nature and manifestations, but with common or opposing goals. These relationships are specific to individual historical periods and largely depend on the sacred or secular nature of art. While ancient times and the Middle Ages can be referred to as a kind of “symphony” between power and art, after the inclusion of the medieval Balkan states in the Ottoman Empire, relations developed in conditions of complex balance and, sometimes, confrontation.
The topic is interdisciplinary and invites participation in the conference not only from art historians but also from archaeologists, restorers, historians, epigraphers, and scientists from other disciplines.
Holding the conference at the Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis, a remarkable example of the interaction between art and power, will provide participants with the opportunity to discuss art among artefacts.
Deadline for submission of summaries and CVs: 1 September 2026
