CALL FOR PUBLICATIONS IN ISSUE NO. 4, 2026
The editorial team of the Art Studies Quarterly journal invites researchers from different generations to contribute articles, studies, and reviews to the forthcoming issue No. 4, 2026.
Issue No. 4, 2026, is dedicated to an ambitious and very broad topic: Cinema and History. From the very beginning, cinema has drawn on history as an invaluable source of plots and characters – a trend that remains visible and relevant to this day. Moreover, visual interpretations of the recent and distant past often compete sharply with, and clash fiercely with, the academic texts of the respective national historiography. In this sense, we propose the following directions for discussion and analysis:
• Authenticity and plausibility in the historical film;
• Uses of history in cinema;
• The past, interpreted through feature and documentary cinema: problems, limitations, and challenges;
• Context and reception of the historical film;
• The importance of archival footage and its integration into new films related to history;
• The historical novel as a possible basis for the historical film;
• The place of the historical film in the teaching of history in secondary and higher education.
The proposals shall be sent by 17 July 2026 (Friday). They should include a brief synopsis of the article, study, or review of no more than 1000 characters, and a short biography of up to 500 characters. The completed studies should be no more than 45,000 characters, the articles – no more than 18,000 characters, and the reviews – between 8,000 and 12,000 characters. They should be received at the edition’s email (probleminaizkustvoto@gmail.com) and at the lead editor’s email (gergana_doncheva3@abv.bg) by 21 September 2026 (Monday).
