Art Studies Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal of the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It is the only academic research journal in Bulgaria in the field of fine arts, theatre, and screen arts. Its first issue went to press in May 1968, and since then the journal has set the scholarly tone for the study of artistic practices in Bulgaria and around the world. The journal’s policy is to present diverse perspectives and to provide a platform for a wide range of authors – Bulgarian and international, established scholars and young researchers – with the aim of offering an adequate and multifaceted reflection of current scholarly inquiries.
The journal’s publishing policy is oriented toward thematic issues, enabling the examination of problems within a given thematic field using the tools and methodologies of different areas of knowledge. Priority is given to newly discovered and unpublished materials. The journal emphasises studies that situate Bulgarian art within the context of Europe and the Balkans.
