Assoc. Prof. Alexander Kuyumdjiev receives Pythagoras Award 2016
The Ministry of Education and Science awarded its prizes in the field of sciences and technologies to researchers, research teams and bodies for the eighth year in a row yesterday, 19 May, at an award ceremony in Sofia Balkan Hotel.
Assoc. Prof. Alexander Kuyumdjiev received the award in the Scholarly Book category for his Murals at the Catholicon of Rila Monastery.
His monograph is the most comprehensive and significant study of the mural painting at Rila Monastery ever conducted in Bulgaria’s art criticism. This fundamental scientific study presents unknown facts about the construction and painting of the Rila Catholicon, offering new assumptions about the earlier history of the cloister and rectifying a number of errors and discrepancies in previous studies or mythologems that have gained currency of the events surrounding the painting of the main church.
